WHAT IS CONTACT IMPROVISATION?

Contact Improvisation is a dance form originating in 1972 by Steve Paxton, exploring a physical point of contact with another person, staying open to new possibilities in the dance while honoring the physical laws that govern movement: gravity, inertia, mass, and momentum. From the outside, it may look like dancing meets martial arts.

In CONTACT BODY we explore the foundational practices of Contact, including mindfulness techniques, somatic exercises, creative improvisation, contemporary floorwork, and Contact partnering combinations

THE DANCE, AS A PRACTICE.

Contact Improvisation dance actually provides us with tools for navigating social dynamics:

➼  Gaining confidence in our abilities to move as dancers on our own or in a group.

Knowing our boundaries and communicating them.

Letting go of control and learning to trust our dance partner.

Attuning to our animal body through our natural reflexes and intuition.

➼  Staying present in every moment to what is being offered.

Moving spontaneously while staying grounded and centered.

➼  Finding a sense of care, gentleness, and curiosity in the dance.
